Pediatric Sedation Dentistry Options in San Diego
At BRSH+FLSS, our primary focus is on preventative pediatric dental solutions. However, an occasional dental emergency can still arise, and if your child needs restorative dental care, it is time to consider the child’s anxiety level. Since both of our pediatric dentists are also on the medical team at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, we’re happy to be able to provide a variety of sedation dentistry options to meet the unique needs of your family.
It all begins with considerations that include the age of the child, medical history, and anxiety/cooperation levels. To that end, we collaborate with parents to help you make the best possible decision. Here are three of the options we offer:
- Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide) – This is more of a relaxation option than a form of sedation. It is a very safe method of relieving anxiety during a dental procedure. The administered gas allows the patient to be 100% awake during the treatment, and administration of oxygen following the treatment clears the gas from the system. Your child should be okay to go right back to daycare, school, or whatever else was going on before the dental trip.
- Conscious Sedation – Oral sedation creates a state of drowsiness that should help an anxious child to be more cooperative. It is important to note that the amount of sedation administered is based on factors including the child’s size. This means a balance needs to be met between the size of the child and the degree of sedation that is needed to determine if this option is viable.
- General Anesthesia – This option is ideal when dental work is extensive, or a child is extremely frightened. Since the child will have no memory of the procedure, there will be no additional apprehension for future dentist visits, and it ensures the dentist will be able to complete the procedure without interference from a very high-anxiety youth.
