Pediatric Dentistry is a dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association and encompasses comprehensive dental care for children of all ages, from infancy through adolescence. A pediatric dentist is a practitioner who has completed an additional two years of extensive post-doctoral training in the diagnosis and treatment of children’s dental and orthodontic problems. This specialty training includes preventative techniques, child psychology, behavior guidance, pediatric-specific restorative dentistry, various sedation techniques, interceptive orthodontic care, and the treatment of children with special needs.
Following specialty training, pediatric dentists have the option to complete a two-step board certification exam administered by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). Successful completion of this voluntary exam provides assurance to the public that the individual has demonstrated the knowledge, skills and experience required to deliver the highest quality of patient care to infants, children, young adults and patients with special health care needs. Upon certification, the individual is designated a status of “Diplomate” of the ABPD. Certification must be renewed annually to maintain board-certified Diplomate status. Both Dr. Pokala and Dr. Chawla are privileged and honored to be Diplomates!
