Does Xylitol Prevent Cavities?
Some pediatric dentists started to proclaim xylitol as a cavity-preventing substance following a study performed in Costa Rica in March 2015. Over 4,000 kids took part in the study, and it revealed a 13% reduction in cavities when toothpaste with both fluoride and xylitol was used.
However, the same study showed that other forms of xylitol use did not reveal any evidence of helping to reduce tooth decay. So what are the facts?
Xylitol does appear to be a better option than sugar since it doesn’t increase the rate of tooth decay like sugar does. However, it’s too soon to declare this natural sugar substitute as some miraculous way to have your cake and strengthen your teeth too.
