Children undergo many physical transitions as they grow up. The stages in their oral development are markers that help parents and caregivers deliver the appropriate dental care at each stage of the children’s growth.
The office of BRSH+FLSS Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics plays a vital role in promoting the dental health of children. Our dedication to providing compassionate, specialized care makes us an ideal choice for parents seeking the best oral care for their youngsters.
Expect this at each life stage of your child’s dental development.
0 to 12 months
His (or her) first primary tooth erupts after about 6 months. The two bottom front teeth debut first, followed by the two top front teeth. He has several primaries when he turns 1. Take him to a pedodontist when he is a year old or after his first tooth erupts—whichever comes first. Scheduled regular visits let the pedodontist monitor early indications of cavities and provide treatment before it worsens. Use a soft, damp cloth after feedings to ward off gum irritation and bacteria.
12 to 36 months
His incisors, canines and molars erupt. Clean them and their surrounding gums with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and a bit (the size of a grain of rice) of fluoride toothpaste.
3 to 6 years
He has all of his 20 primary teeth. Have him brush his teeth twice a day, and increase the toothpaste to the size of a pea. Show him how to use dental floss between the teeth that have started to touch each other.
6 to 12
He starts to lose his primary teeth. Take him for his initial orthodontic check-up at the first sign of a problem or by the time he’s 7. He has a combination of primary and permanent teeth, and his face and jaws are developing. An orthodontist will gather crucial information about how well his permanent teeth are coming in. If the orthodontist sees current or potential issues, she (or he) will describe treatment options.
12 to 18
All of his permanent teeth are in.
