4 Snacks to Have on Hand During the Summer
When the kids are off from school, they may snack more frequently. That means it is important to have healthy snacks in the fridge during the summer months so that the kids are not constantly reaching for things that have a detrimental effect on oral health. Here are 4 snacks your kids can eat that actually help teeth.
- Vegetable sticks – Besides being rich in vitamin A and fiber, carrots are also a crunchy vegetable. Eating carrots and other veggie sticks can help produce more saliva and may lessen plaque buildup.
- Yogurt – The combination of calcium and probiotics is too good to pass up. Just be careful not to get yogurt that has had a lot of sugar added to it. Natural and non-fat yogurts are best. Granola or fruit can help make it more of a treat without removing the health benefits.
- Apples – Not only is this a fruit that is high in fiber, but it is a crunchy fruit that is fibrous in texture. As a result, apples help to clean bacteria from the mouth. It may even help to improve a child’s breath in between brushings.
- Cheese and crackers – Okay, so most of the benefit here comes from the cheese which is high in calcium. However, if you pair the cheese with a healthy cracker, it becomes a more filling snack that may also offer some fiber and whole grains. Plus, you can go with a higher quality slicing cheese rather than a string cheese that may have added sugars.
