3 Tips for Teaching Your Kids to Floss the Right Way

Flossing is an important part of a good oral hygiene routine. As a result, parents need to teach their children how to floss properly. Here are three tips to help you teach your kids to floss the right way.

#1 Set the Example

Your kids are only going to want to do things they see you doing. That doesn’t mean you have to floss in the living room. Just be sure that the kids know you are flossing every night. Maybe you can floss together if you have a large enough bathroom to share the mirror.

#2 Choose the Right Floss

Kids are picky about flavors. Letting your kids choose the flavor of floss they want may help encourage them to be regular. Of course, not every flavor is going to be exactly what your child expects, so don’t be surprised if you occasionally have to replace a completely good floss with another flavor because it didn’t taste as good as it sounded.

#3 Teach Proper Technique

When your child is very young, you will have to floss his or her teeth, much the way the hygienist will floss your teeth when you get a professional cleaning tice per year. This gives you the chance to teach your kids the proper flossing motion and that you don’t have to scrub until your gums bleed. Consistency is more important than arm strength when it comes to flossing. Make sure they understand to move the floss up and down along the teeth and not just forward and back.
