Why Does My Child Have Bad Breath?

Why Does My Child Have Bad Breath?

As children mature into adults, it becomes more important to keep up with things such as body odor and halitosis (bad breath). But if your child suffers from bad breath, you know this problem isn’t just relegated to teens and adults. Why do kids sometimes have a problem with halitosis and how can you take care of it?

The Most Common Reason for Bad Breath in Children

Most cases of bad breath in children result from some sort of infection. Whether it is an upper respiratory infection, tonsillitis, or an ear, nose, and throat issue, infection may cause your child to breathe through his or her mouth. This reduces saliva and can cause dry mouth conditions. Mouth breathing combined with reduced saliva levels can quickly lead to bad breath.

How to Fight Bad Breath

Correcting the underlying issue is important, so if there is a reason to believe your child does have some sort of infection, a visit to the doctor is in order. However, good oral hygiene is also important for maintaining pleasant breath, so be sure your child brushes at least twice per day and flosses daily as well.
