Helping Your Children Cope with Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth can be especially difficult for a child who does not understand why cold or hot foods are suddenly resulting in discomfort. We’re here to help you understand some of the things that cause tooth sensitivity in children and provide some preventative care techniques.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth in Children

There are a number of causes that require intervention by a dentist. These include:

  • Cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Fractured or cracked teeth
  • Lost or damaged fillings

However, if teeth are only mildly sensitive, it could be for a less serious reason. In such cases, a few preventative measures could keep sensitivity from coming back.

Preventing Sensitive Teeth in Children

To eliminate and prevent problems with sensitive teeth, you may want to try some of the following options:

  • Use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth – Some toothpastes are specifically made to help with sensitive teeth.
  • Use a kid-friendly mouthwash – Mouthwash may help with gingivitis, the early onset of which may be the cause of the sensitivity.
  • Switch to a soft-bristle brush – Medium or hard bristle brushes are not needed if one brushes regularly and harder bristles may be tough on enamel, thus increasing sensitivity.
  • Maintain proper oral care – Brushing and flossing regularly can maintain tooth and gum health, thereby reducing sensitivity.
